It was fun while it lasted

The summer season around here seems like it's always in a hurry. This year it teased us while it visited other, warmer states for a while and then showed up on the doorstep one day with a suitcase full of 90 degree days, looking like it was here to stay. The following weeks were filled with a sometimes frantic effort to fit in as much summer as possible: camp! bike! hike! grow! eat ice cream!

Some time last week, summer quietly slipped out the back door without so much as a "see ya!" Clouds crept down the hillsides after lunch, followed by a steady rain and a cold that stung the fingers during a damp tomato harvest. Morning glories were still in bloom long after noon.

Thanks to Blazey for her commuting video.

The sun has returned, slightly altered, but now it seems like we are all suddenly a bit more lethargic and can't explain why. It's now more acceptable to sleep late on the weekend. When the dark finally drives me indoors, I find that the hour is still "reasonable." Quiet pursuits like movie watching and postcard writing are more appealing. The quilt on the bed is a welcome change.

Summer generally leaves a bit of a mess after it goes, so there's still some cleanup work to be done (the garden took the "grow" idea pretty seriously), but I think I will enjoy the gradual slowing that follows its departure.
